Kurt Browning ready to feel 'hug' of London skating crowd

The Stars on Ice tour can be a gruelling journey for performers, figure skater Kurt Browning said.

But, for he and other cast members, Sunday's 4 p.m. show at Budweiser Gardens will feel like a homecoming.

Several of the performers - including local natives Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir along with Patrick Chan - were at the venue last month to compete in the World Figure Skating Championships. Browning was here as a commentator.

London's always a welcome stop on the tour, Browning said. This year, he suspects, will be no different.

"London comes at the end of a big push through Kingston, Toronto and Hamilton, and, the day before London, we film a TV show which means a lot of pressure and sometimes skating more than once" he said. "By the time we get to London it has been a long hard week and you always get a sort of 'hug' feeling from the city in the afternoon.

"Sometimes matinees have a sort of down feeling, a sense of calm, and the city, the same city that made the World Figure Skating Championships such a success, can give that relaxed feeling in the knees for performers."

While Browning's performance at Budweiser Gardens will mark his 846th over a 23-year span with Stars on Ice, another star is making his debut this year.

Chan, the world's number one male figure skater, is new to the tour, and people can expect to see something a bit out of the routine, Browning said.

"Patrick now does this really cool number doing really difficult hat tricks," Browning said. "That shows ... a really different side of his ability, which is what Stars on Ice should do - take a three-time world champion and give him a play to try something new."
