I'll Be With You

written by May Lebrun

In February of 1994, when the whole world watched Kurt's Olympic dreams fall in Lilhammer, Norway, I was won of the many Canadians tuning in to watch him on television. When I saw his tears, when I saw him apologizing to Canada, it wrenched my heart more than I could ever say. I was torn up as I'm sure many others were.

A few days later, on February 17, 1994, I wrote a song... not deliberately... I didn't plan to write a song. It just came. It began as I was on my way home from the store and I knew that it was going to be a special song, so I sprinted home to work on it. Four hours later, Kurt Browning's Song was born.

It's called "I'll Be With You" and is a very deep and poignant song written for Kurt from God, telling him how he was with him when he wept at the Olympics. Well, I knew this song was important and would be good medicine for Kurt at that time. He was still in Lilhammer, so I taped it, wrote a letter, sent a lyric sheet and couriered it to Norway. I had never done anything so bold and gutsy in my whole life. I'm not usually that way at all. I'm very... uh... I can be shy about things.

They showed a clip on our tv station of Kurt receiving that very package. A friend who had helped me send it recognized it right away and got really excited.

Well, the package ended up in Neva's hands (Kurt's sweetheart mom... and I can tell you she is). I got the most beautiful letter from her. She is a doll and Kurt is so blessed to have her. I'd adopt her for my mom in a second.

She said that she had to remove her glasses because of the tears coming and that she would make sure Kurt heard the song. Since then, I shelved the song, but lately I've dusted it off and given it a makeover musically, not changing the tune, but enhancing it. I was a younger and less experienced songwriter 6 years ago. It's going to go on my first CD, due for release as soon as I get the recording done.

I've included the lyrics here as a point of interest. I thought that maybe Kurt's fans would want to see them. If it's not what you're looking for on this site, that' s ok. I just wanted to share my special Kurt encounter... not as up close and personal as some, but very special to my heart. Kurt is a dear and precious soul. I'll take kindness and integrity over an Olympic gold any day... Kurt gets a gold medal in that department hands down.

I'll Be With You

Perish the thought! Can it be that tears are falling
From the eyes of one so dauntless yesterday?
In the darkness of that hour
Dear child, my love and power
Upheld you, I was with you all the way

Did you feel my loving arms around you gently?
Did you know I longed to wipe those tears away?
I walked that painful road with you
Search your heart, you know it's true
Dearest child, I was with you all the way

You have soared to heights of triumph
And I shared your victory
But, when your dreams have turned to ashes
While you're watching helplessly
Child, just reach out to me
And do not be afraid
I'm right here, and I'll be with you all the way

I know your heart is not a stranger to rejection
Even though the world may think you have it all
Loss and loneliness you've known
But, you have never been alone
No, dearest child, I've been with you through it all

I rejoiced with you when the whole world was
applauding
And I wept with you when the whole world watched you
fall
Hold your head up high and show
That within your heart you know
You are my child, and I've been with you through it
all

You have soared to heights of triumph
And I shared your victory
But, when your dreams have turned to ashes
While you're watching helplessly
Child, just reach out to me
I can hear the faintest call
I love you and I'll be with you through it all
I love you and I'll be with you... through it all.
