Grand Opening of GM Place in Vancouver (1995)

Photos provided by Nancy

In September 1995, to help celebrate the grand opening of Vancouver's new arena, GM Place, Kurt and Kristi were invited to skate at a gala that included performers such as Shania Twain, David Foster and Sarah McLachlan. These photos were taken earlier in the day when Kurt and Kristi practiced at the arena. Both of them ran through their programs and spent a bit of time trying out lifts and pairs moves. During the show, Kurt and Kristi skated on a little strip of ice down the middle of the rink, since one end was taken up by a stage and the other by seating. Kristi skated her "Power of Love" number, while Kurt skated to the theme for "St. Elmo's Fire" which was composed by David Foster. Foster provided the live music, playing piano, while Kurt skated. Even though the ice surface was small, both skaters managed to pull off double axels and several triple toe loops. At the end of the evening, Kurt and Kristi both came out and skated together while all the musicians and orchestra gathered on stage. Kurt and Kristi did some pseudo pairs moves, such as lifts where Kristi's legs are wrapped around Kurt's waist, and he carried her for a spin. While they were dancing and waving to the crowd, a musician on stage encouraged Kurt to boost Kristi up on stage where she danced in her skates until she was tossed back down onto ice level into Kurt's arms..
