LETHBRIDGE (CP) - Kurt Browning did what everyone expected him to
do, Josee Chouinard surprised everyone with a gold in the women's
singles, and Jacqueline Petr and Mark Janoschak were downright whacky
on their way to winning the ice dance last night at the SunLife Skate
Canada figure skating competition.
Browning, the two-time defending world champion from Caroline,
Alta., won the men's singles despite a fall and two errors in his long
program. He said his program suffered because his legs "weren't quite
happy."
"Usually I find when I get into a competition I plow through the
program and, if anything, I get stronger at the end," Browning said
after collecting an assortment of flowers, stuffed animals and hats
from a cheering crowd.
"It might have thrown my confidence to find my legs not quite as
happy to be out there as I was. It showed at the end with one
two-footed jump and one jump where I pulled the parachute in the air."
Browning's performance still earned him a 5.9, two 5.8s and four
5. 7s for artistic merit.
Poland's Grzegorz Filipowski, who won Friday's short program,
finished second.
