Prepare for an evening of heavy metal when the Target Stars on Ice
glide onto the frozen Bi-Lo Center floor Thursday.
That doesn't mean Tara Lipinski and Kristi Yamaguchi will perform
double axles and triple toe-loops to the throbbing strains of
Metallica and Slayer. No, we're talking neckwear, specifically the
impressive collection of gold, silver and bronze medallions owned by
the skaters who will perform in the show.
Olympic gold medalists Tara Lipinski, Kristi Yamaguchi, Katarina
Witt and Ilia Kulik are on the bill, along with pairs silver medalists
Anjelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsiannikov, and bronze medalist Denis
Petrov (who won in the pairs competition with Elena Bechke).
There are plenty of other top names in the skating world as well,
including Jenni Meno and Todd Sand, Kurt Browning, Steven Cousins and
Swiss national champion Lucinda Ruh, nicknamed "Queen of Spin" for her
270-rpm twirls.
The show is choreographed by 1984 gold medalists Jayne Torvill and
Christopher Dean, along with former Olympians Sandra Bezic and Michael
Seibert.
Though the skaters are possessors of heavy metal, the musical
accompaniment to their skating decidedly isn't. There are several
selections from the film "Moulin Rouge," including the baby-diva
remake of "Lady Marmalade."
The repertoire ranges from Tom Jones to Fatboy Slim, U2 to Janet
Jackson, Roberta Flack to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.
A portion of the proceeds from Target Stars on Ice benefits the
Target House, which provides housing for the families of ill children
staying at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
