Olympic and world champion figures skaters are picnicking Friday
with patients of St. Jude Children's Hospital, and the grass won't be
the only thing green. During the visit, champion skater Scott Hamilton
will present a $225,000 donation to Target House.
Hamilton is one of the Target Stars on Ice, a group of champion
skaters that has supported Target House since 1999 with a portion of
ticket revenue from the ice skating production. Friday's event is the
second picnic with the kids.
Target House provides free housing for St. Jude Children's Research
Hospital patients and their families, who previously had stayed in
hotels. Patients at Memphis-based St. Jude's are children undergoing
treatment for cancer and other catastrophic diseases.
Target House, funded by Target Stores and its vendor partners, is
expanding to meet 100% of St. Jude's long-term housing needs. It
expects to open a new 78,760-square-foot addition with 46 apartment
suites and numerous amenities in November.
Ronald McDonald House, funded by McDonald's, provides short-term
housing to St. Jude patients and their families.
Besides Hamilton, the Stars on Ice include Olympic champions Tara
Lipinski, Kristi Yamaguchi, Katarina Witt, and Ilia Kulik. It includes
four-time world champion Kurt Browning; six-time U.S. National
champion, world champion and three-time Olympian Todd Eldredge;
two-time world champions Anjelika Krylova & Oleg Ovsiannikov;
three-time U.S. National pair champions Jenni Meno & Todd Sand;
Olympic silver medalist and two-time world champion Denis Petrov;
eight-time British champion Steven Cousins; and two-time Swiss
National champion Lucinda Ruh.
The presentation is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., after which the
Target Stars on Ice cast will picnic with St. Jude kids and their
families.
The cast is scheduled to perform March 23 at Desoto Civic Center in
Southaven, Miss., just outside Memphis.
