1990/91 Competitive Programs and Exhibition Debuts:
  • Short Program: Hindu War God (Music by Borodin, Mozart, Phil Collins and choreographed by Brian Power). Elements in this program include a triple axel/triple toe combination, double axel and a triple flip. Kurt originally wore a sliver shirt w/ black pants although the costume changed twice in later years.
  • Long Program: Sons of Italy (Choreographed by Brian Power) This program includes 3 triple/triple combinations including a Triple Axel/Triple Toe, Triple Flip/Triple Toe and a Triple Sal/Triple Loop. Kurt's costume is a white satin blowsy shirt with green trimmings and a pair of black pants.
  • Exhibition: Johnny Guitar by Peggy Lee - In this program, Kurt portrays the character of Johnny Guitar, a gangster who has just received a fatal blow in a knife fight. With the emphasis on artistry/choreography rather than his trademark jumps, Kurt shows the world that he can reach down deep an deliver a spell binding dramatic program.
  • Exhibition: World on a String by Louis Armstrong - Televised only once at the Canadians Gala, Kurt wears a red "smoking jacket" and black pants.
  • Exhibition: Charlie Brown by the Coasters - Kurt improvises his way through this exhibition number in an oversized yellow w/ black zig-zag Charlie Brown shirt and black pants. NBC convinces him to wear a microphone while he skates and he narrates his program. Kurt fakes a fall on the back flip as the finale to this program.

Did you know?
  • Kurt's mom sewed all of Kurt's costumes before Kurt moved to Edmonton.
  • Kurt was the first person to land a 3 Sal/3Loop in competition. He accomplished this at '90 Nations Cup (in Belsenkirchen, West Germany) w/ a twisted knee
  • Kurt was the first person to land three triple-triple combinations in one program (3 Axel/3 Toe, 3 Sal/3 Loop, 3 Flip/3 Toe) at the World Championships in Munich, Germany.
  • Kurt became the only person to win Worlds both with and without figures after figures were eliminated from competition in 1991.
  • Kurt was the first figure skated ever eto be selected by the Canadian Press as the recipient of the Lionel Conacher Award. He beat out hockey greats Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier in 1990.
  • While shooting "Tall in the Saddle", the temperature with wind chill was 40 below zero. Kurt had to repeat one of his jumps 14 times in only a Western Shirt because he kept getting blown off balance.
  • Kurt received his first 6.0 at a Canadian Championships during his SP in 1991
  • Kurt took up golf in 1990 ... and got his first "hole in one" already!

Many thanks to the following LKK Members for their Kurt contributions for this "chapter" of Memory Lane:
  • DebiDDS from New York
