20 Years of Stars on Ice: 1997
Canadian Stars on Ice 1997 Cast
The 1996-97 tour saw the reintroduction of Katia Gordeeva as a
full-time cast member, and the addition of Jayne Torvill and
Christopher Dean to the cast. Christopher Dean would soon prove to be
an integral part of the Stars on Ice creative team, becoming official
co-choreographer in 1998, and then director and head choreographer for
the 2003-04 season. The "Red Hat" act I closing ensemble was his and
Jayne Torvill's first contribution choreographically to the tour.
Featuring Kurt in a prominent role, the central premise of the number
revolved around maintaining possession of a red hat - getting it,
keeping it away from the others, chasing it around the ice. With the
hat getting tossed from one skater to another constantly, there was a
high probability of the hat getting dropped, and evidently, anyone who
dropped the hat would have to pay. The 1996-97 tour also featured
another classic Kurt program - the Nat King Cole "L-O-V-E" medley,
which he called his "Serenade to Sonia."
In 1997, Stars on Ice also went
to Germany with Katarina Witt, Jane Torvill & Christopher Dean,
Scott Hamilton, Jill Trenary, Ekatarina Gordeeva, Kristi Yamaguchi,
Kurt Browning, Rosalynn Sumners, Radka Kovarikova & Rene Novotny, Paul
Wylie, Elena Bechke & Denis Petrov, Denise Biellmann.
