20 Years of Stars on Ice: 2009

The 2009 Canadian tour was a bit of an oddity. Due to budget issues, the tour did without show lighting in all stops except the taped for TV Hamilton stop. This lent a rather odd, dim feel to the show that made it seem less like a production. However, the skaters made up for the lack of lighting with some top-notch skating and a great deal of enthusiasm. There were some funny and cute video transitions that showed that the skaters had a good sense of self-skewering humor, first telling the audience "don't skate", and then giving some fairly silly reasons to skate. Another video had Kurt getting pied - twice - after the other skaters did their best to distract him from talking to the camera. The group numbers were also light-hearted and fun, with Kurt taking a central role in leading the other skaters through their paces in "Sock Him in the Jaw", and the guys doing their yearly all-guys number for "We've Got It Going On."

Kurt's two numbers showcased some of the best of his skating. The self-choreographed "I'm Yours" was a classically light-hearted, fleet-footed love letter to the audience, with Kurt shedding layer after layer of clothing, each proclaiming "I'm Yours" and ending with "I'm Still Yours" across the back of his T-shirt. "Spirit of Adventure" featured Kurt trying an entirely new style courtesy of a ballet choreographer, that challenged him to use his body in new and different ways and to get out of his comfort zone. For the first few shows on tour, Kurt performed the number in a black mesh sleeveless shirt, but for the Hamilton show, he decided to shed the shirt and go shirtless for the remaining stops on tour. The program reminded many of "Nyah" in its innovative dance choreography. Both the tour and Kurt celebrated their 200th shows in the 2009 tour

The fans speak...

I enjoyed your program "I'm Yours" in Halifax Stars on Ice last year! You definately are an entertainer and my ALL TIME FAVORITE skater! Your footwork amazes me. My daughter, Emily, 7, had never seen you perform until last year at Halifax SOI and she said after one of your programs that she wanted to be an entertainer just like you and be able to do footwork and jumps just like you. My favorite program is Antares. You make every jump, spin, etc. look so easy!

The one consistent memory is joy. I love watching this guy perform, and he can do more different styles than anyone I've ever seen.

Okay, well, considering I'm only in high school, I really haven't seen all of Kurt's career, but what I have has certainly made up for all the time I've missed. The first time I saw him was at Ice Chips in Boston. I had just recently converted from "sasha idolism" to "kurtism" (that's officially a word), so seeing him there was awesome. I don't remember saying this, but evidently, I excitedly said to my friends, "oh my god I can see Kurt Browning's hair follicles!" Most teenagers procrastinate doing homework by going on facebook or texting. I watch Kurt videos. The only other time I've seen him was at Thin Ice, which I went to because he was going to be hosting. While he had his back turned towards me, I did this little hail to him. My mom laughed at my severe nerdiness and theatricalishness (I can't think of the right word, so that's also officially a word), but I'm not sure how fake my hail was. Kurt is so incredibly down to earth while being such a talented performer and athlete. And at 18 years old, he's a fantastic skater with such a promising career ahead of him : ) These 20 years he has been with Stars On Ice have showed how incredible a person he is, and he just keeps on blowing me away more and more with everything he does. Good luck to him in the future!
