20 Years of Stars on Ice: 1991

1991 was the first year Stars on Ice came to Canada, and with it came special guest star 3-time World Champion Kurt Browning. Kurt performed three solos on the tour that showcased his range, from the playful Charlie Brown, to the jumpless, angsty Johnny Guitar, to his competitive short program, Hindu War God.

The fans speak...

In the spring of 1991, I attended my first Stars on Ice show in Edmonton to see Kurt Browning skate. That show was magical - and I was hooked. It's been 20 years and I haven't missed a show since.

I have so many wonderful memories of Kurt performing in Stars on Ice, here are a few of them:
  • that first show in Edmonton, when we made Kurt come back out and do encores - so many encores that I lost count. I think we would have stood and cheered all night.
  • The year he performed "O Canada". That was very special.
  • "Casablanca". I still remember the sound of the plane taking off, and somehow, even though I'd never seen the movie and didn't know the plot ..... I knew the girl was gone.
  • "That's Entertainment". They wouldn't let Kurt perform at the World Championships in Edmonton so he came back with Stars on Ice, skated "That's Entertainment", and brought the house down. I remember people stomping their feet, and yelling and screaming - the Coliseum was literally shaking. He skated it perfectly. That was awesome. What a night.
  • "Nyah". Brilliant, simply brilliant. A masterpiece. It was a privilege to be in the building and see it skated in person.
  • "Mr. Bojangles". I loved that program. Tap dancing on the ice - who else could do that? And totally in character, right down to the tilt of the hat.
  • "I'm Yours". This program just plain makes me smile. I put the music on my iPod, and it still makes me happy every time I hear it.
  • I have had so much fun watching Kurt skate in Stars on Ice. He has made me smile, he's made me laugh, and he's brought a tear to my eye because of the beauty & emotion of his skating. I hope he knows how much pleasure he has brought to so many people over the years. Kurt Browning *is* Stars on ice, and when he performs, we all go home with a smile on our face.
