20 Years of Stars on Ice: 1992
In Kurt's second year on Stars on Ice, he began to take part in
ensemble numbers, skating in "Five Guys Named Moe" with Brian Orser,
Bill Fauver, Ekaterina Gordeeva & Sergei Grinkov. Kurt's tour
programs in 1992 were Johnny Guitar and Sign Your Name/Dance Little
Sister (listed as "My Girl and My Chair" in the program), but Toronto
and Edmonton audiences were treated to extra programs. At the Toronto
show (which was recorded for TV), Kurt skated a special performance of
Bring Him Home, with special guest Michael Burgess, Canada's original
Jean Valjean, singing live in hockey skates at center ice. In
Edmonton, he performed O Canada for an appreciate home audience.

The fans speak...
When Stars on Ice was announced for 1991 I, of course, planned to
attend. At the time, I provided day care for a little girl who was 8
years old. I told the family that I would need to take the day off
since I had to take the bus to get to Toronto and the show was on a
Wednesday night. Then they announced Kurt was also going to appear.
Abby (the little girl), loved Kurt. She called him "Kurtie Brownie",
Brian Orser was another favourite and was dubbed "Bri Bri". Anyway,
her mom decided that she and Abby would like to attend as well and we
would all drive down together. We had fairly decent seats for the
show - around 10th or 11th row - and had very good seats for Kurt and
Brian's routines. Abby really wanted to meet Kurt and I told her that
it might be possible after the show as he left the arena. So after
the show, I led Abby and her mom to the backstage area where I hoped
the skaters would make an appearance. We were told that the skaters
would be at a party at the Hot Stove Lounge (which was a bar/lounge
within the Maple Leaf Gardens) and that we might be able to meet them
there as they went in and out. So we headed over there and joined the
crowd - who all seemed to be waiting for Kurt. Abby's mom agreed to
wait since Abby wanted to meet Kurt so badly. She had even made him a
little gift - a friendship pin, which was a little safety pin with
beads on it - which she wrapped in gift paper. So, we waited and
people came and went and each time the doorman opened the door the
girls waiting to see Kurt screamed and demanded to be let in or to
have Kurt come out to see them. Little Abby was overwhelmed and very
quiet, but still wanted to wait for her chance. Her mom wanted to get
going because we still had a two hour drive ahead of us. We decided
we needed to go soon, which upset Abby. As did all the girls
screaming and complaining because Kurt would come out to see them.
Just then, the doorman opened the door and saw Abby crying, holding
her little gift. He asked her if it was for Kurt (I have no idea how
he knew - LOL) and Abby silently nodded yes. Then he grabbed her hand
and hauled her into the bar. Her mom and I just kind of stood there
in shock. We just let some unknown person take a 8 year old into a
bar with a bunch of strangers! We waited and now all the girls
waiting for Kurt were waiting for Abby and to see if she was
successful. Eventually, after about 30 minutes, the door opened and
out comes Abby. She walked over to us, not saying a word. I asked
her if she met Kurt and she nodded, and then burst into tears! All
the girls cheered and congratulated Abby! We had to leave at this
point, so when we got to the car, Abby got her voice back. We
discovered that - she was escorted to Kurt, who was sitting at a table
signing photos. He picked her up and put her on his lap, gave her
hugs and took her present. She told us that she made him open it and
pin it on his suit jacket. He asked her if she liked the show, if she
skated etc. Apparently, she was with Kurt the whole time she was in
there. I don't know if Abby remembers this as clear as I do. I'm
sure Kurt wouldn't remember it, as it was probably one of many
thousands of similar encounters for him. But I will always remember
how kind Kurt was to a little girl. He could have easily signed a
photo for her and sent her on her way, taking her gift and tossing it
on a table, forgotten with many other tokens. But he didn't and that
is why I admire Kurt and always will.
